When I started quilting I came up with the idea of “A Quilt for Every Room.” When I struggled with a quilt design I would go back to the room I was designing for and I would get “unlocked.” It struck me along the way that I needed to design a quilt for our bathroom to complete this project. Our bathroom is so great, covered in tiles that I love. But it needed color.

This design started with a cheap bathmat that inspired the colors and a handful of old leftover blocks. When I found this bathmat I realized that the leftover blocks could really work together in a single piece. I tried for a week to lay out these blocks for this quilt and failed. I looked through many quilt books and finally came across the pinwheel block. It had the movement and flow that I was looking for. I took apart the flying geese and reconstructed these blocks. My children convinced me to add give blue pieces. As usual, they were correct.

This striking design is fun to explore, doesn’t require a pattern even for a beginner. I highly recommend this idea as a starting point if you are new to quilting. Strips can be cut by eye without measurement and you can cut the lengths as you sew. The design possibilities are endless. The simple constraints of this quilt style allow for so much in regard to contrast, color, and dimension.

I am asked frequently if this quilt will hold up in the bathroom. I didn’t add a layer of batting so it is light. We have had this installed for several months and it rarely gets wet. We use the shower daily.
